Photoshop's legacy

Here we have Fore Left's first annual Saturday night Deer Blogging feature. This is "Powder", a white whitetail deer.

Or is it? Click on the pic.

Photoshop and similar programs are great, but they've reduced the reality of photography. Even when pictures are completely legitimate there's no way to immediately tell anymore, which leads to questioning everything. In the good ole days of Nikons, Plus X and Kodachrome 25 this wasn't an issue. So just wondering, can we really say a picture is worth a thousand words anymore?

The politics of civil war

To hear the American elite media tell it, Iraq is already in a civil war. They're not of course, but the prospect is rather frightening. For example, if worse comes to worse, which side would we choose?

Don Rumsfeld visited Congress Thursday to chat about that very subject and to lay out our plan. Here it is:
"The plan is to prevent a civil war, and to the extent one were to occur, to have the Iraqi security forces deal with it to the extent they're able to,"
Not too comforting, eh? Everyone knows that during our own civil war between the states we had brothers fighting against brothers. The ISF might quickly melt into sectarian militias should the worse case happen.

To avoid civil war we need some positives and soon, mainly from the Sunni block. For example, it would help immensely if they began to understand that al-Zarqawi is a nothing but a thug-puppet of the forces who don't want a peaceful Iraq. Mohammed from Iraq the Model has some cautiously optimistic news on that front, suggesting the Sunni tribes are already running Zarqawi into the hills, but we've heard these fantastic things before.

Meanwhile, Weekly Standard reporter Stephen Hayes has another column about those captured Iraqi government documents retrieved after the fall of Baghdad. Several republicans in Congress have been pressing for their release, and part of the package already slipped out a few weeks ago in the form of those Saddam office tapes. You remember--the ones reported as warnings from Saddam to Bush about the upcoming Islamic terrorism that would not contain his fingerprints. Oh yeah, and stuff about nuclear plasma and bioweapons.

Incredibly, Hayes reports that President Bush also wants them released but Intelligence Czar Negroponte doesn't. Folks, that's what some might call misinformation. If the president wanted the docs out, they would already be out.

Releasing the docs might also ruin Condi Rice's day since they probably contain sensitive indictments of certain countries we now consider friends, or others now helping us who didn't before. Some of these might still have a dog in the Iraqi fight, including a favorite side should there be a civil war. That alone may be enough reason to keep the release rate at a trickle.

MORE 3/11/06

In case you missed it, Michael Totten has a first-hand account of Zarqawi's old stomping grounds. It's a must-read.

MORE 3/12/06

Caught Fox's show with Paul Gigot a bit earlier (yep I'm a loser). One of the guests was Stephen Hayes, who sounded every bit as amazed on TV as he did in his article regarding the game between Bush and Negroponte. Gigot asked the obvious question--if Bush wanted em released and Negroponte won't, why does he still work for the government? Hayes answered that he continues to believe the sides are working towards a release.

Maybe they're waiting for the Saddam trial to end before uncovering more stuff. Hopefully it won't linger as long as Milosevic's.

DOCUMENT DUMP 3/14/06

According to an ecstatic Stephen Hayes, the Iraqi docs he's been chasing for months are finally going to be released publicly. Maybe John Negroponte was told to rethink his position after the story hit the press? Anyway, let's hope it's not one of those "be careful what you wish for" situations. The prez could use some positives.

Ophelia -- a mission from God

Ophelia Ford, famous for her involvement in the contested Tennessee state Senate election where dead people voted, says she is being used by God:
"Nothing like this has ever happened before. That's why God is using me -- little old me -- to make needed laws that needed to be changed ... God is using me, can't you see it? The writing is on the wall. He chose little old me to use. I don't know when you all are going to get that. It's not about me. I've been chosen. I was chosen to get into this election by the Lord I serve," she said.
Somehow that triggered a "Blues Brothers" flashback where Dan Ackroyd said, "we're on a mission from God" and Aretha Franklin shot back, "Don't you blaspheme in here."

Everyone knows God works in mysterious ways, but surely Miss Ophelia doesn't think the Big Guy is using the dead-voter scandal to change the absentee ballot or voting district laws? Maybe she meant tightening up the entire process. With that I'd agree.

The Senate is moving forward on the election and expects a settlement sometime in April. The plan is send letters to each of the challenged voters (not the dead ones) and offer them the chance to prove their residency.

More Memphis politics....

Memphis mayor W.W. Herenton was scheduled to testify in the trial of former Atlanta mayor Bill Campbell in February. The trial is coming to a close, but we've seen no reports locally about what Mayor Willie had to say. Searching around, this was the most up to date story I could find, dated in early Feb:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton said today that his expected testimony at the federal corruption trial of former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell is the result of a subpoena obtained by the defense, not by prosecutors.

Herenton declined to comment on the substance of his testimony expected this month in Atlanta. But he issued a statement saying his administration "in no way, form or fashion, has been accused of any wrongdoing."
One would think a local news outlet would have commented had anything major transpired, right? Guess we can take the loud cricket sounds as an indication this thing is effectively dead and buried.

MEDIA HEATHENS 3/11/06

Mayor Herenton was asked Friday about Miss Ophelia's divine providence comments. First, a flashback:
On New Year's Day two years ago, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton said he was chosen by God and had been given a vision for the city. Herenton told a prayer breakfast crowd that, "The God we serve doesn't give everybody a vision. Everybody doesn't see what I see."
Regards Ms Ford, the mayor chastised thusly:
"Some of the reaction sometimes from the media gives a person like me the view that maybe the media community is almost atheistic, that you're atheists," Herenton said, adding that the media's views are not the same as those with deep profound Christian values. "It is a part of our basic spiritual foundation that some of us believe that God does in fact choose people for certain purposes. "Now the universe may not believe that, but because Sen. Ford stated that -- to me it is not something for the media to ridicule."
Herenton has a minor point. The black community, especially in the south, has a culture of religion. There's virtually no way to separate the church and state, which is why during election season you'll see a steady stream of politicians in the pulpits. However, this cultural phenomenon should not be immune from criticism just because it involves the Almighty. Simply questioning a politician's assertion they've been preordained doesn't mean the questioner is an automatic atheist. The Founders might have also have felt preordained but they rarely spoke of it in public.

The Mayor needs to understand the media's job is to question things. For example, if Terry Roland had said, "I believe I was sent by God to straighten out this corrupt system" I'm sure Herenton would expect the media to look into it. Skin color shouldn't make a difference.

There is some irony. George W. Bush has also hinted perhaps he was pre-ordained to become the president. By my calculations, that seems to place him on the same team as our Memphis democrats. God does work in mysterious ways indeed.

The rest of the story

Remember the story about that precocious young lad who ventured to Iraq by himself and lived to tell about it? There was more to the story, but for some reason the MSM wasn't interested in telling us. Such is not the problem for bloggers.

As Paul Harvey says, now you know the rest of the story.

Southern Republican Leadership Conference

This is a relatively big event for Memphis. Mick Wright is live blogging from the Peabody Hotel, check out his coverage at Mainstreet Journal. Here's a cross-state link to other coverage.

DAY TWO 3/11/06

Seems we've made the national news, but only because of the 'scandal' involving McCain and the straw poll. That's Memphis--forever saddled with allowing Dr King to get shot, Elvis, and now McCaingate.

Even though I live in the Bluff city area, other responsibilities more important than politics have kept me from the festivities. Do you buy that? Alrighty, in reality they probably would have called security on me, trying to pass for a blogger and all.

Anywho, this lazy armchair pundit is certainly enjoying the coverage from Mick, Adam and the the AlphaPatriot. The Commercial Appeal's coverage has been nonexistant in comparison.

3/11 attacks - no ties to anyone

We're approaching the 2nd anniversary of Spain's 9/11- the so-called 3/11 attacks in Madrid. Spanish investigators are finalizing a report on the attack, and today a few of them popped up anonymously to inform the media there were no connections to Bin Laden/al Qaeda.
The intelligence chief said there were no phone calls between the Madrid bombers and al-Qaida and no money transfers. The Western official said the plotters had links to other Islamic radicals in Western Europe, but the plan was hatched and organized in Spain. "This was not an al-Qaida operation," he said. "It was homegrown."
The New Yorker seemed to hint at this back in 2004. It's a little curious that a "western official" (whatever that means) was involved in this leak.
While the plotters of the Madrid attack were likely motivated by bin Laden's October 2003 call for attacks on European countries that supported the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, there is no evidence they were in contact with the al-Qaida leader's inner circle, the intelligence official said.
I get the feeling their classification of AQ is pretty narrow here, reminiscent of the infamous definition of the word is. For example, does this mean there were no contacts with AQ in Iraq, ie, al-Zarqawi? Exactly who comprises AQ's inner circle these days?
most of the plotters were Moroccan and Syrian immigrants, many with criminal records in Spain for drug trafficking and other crimes. They paid for explosives used in the attack with hashish.
This certainly doesn't fit the profile of a religious fundamentalist, however it does fit the profile of the first WTC bomber and the 9/11 mastermind, both of whom hung out at cathouses while in east Asia. It also fits the profile of Zarqawi, who was once called a 'street thug' by the King of Jordan. It also fits the profile of some of the 19 hijackers in America who were known to frequent bars. Perhaps just cover, perhaps not.
And agents specializing in Islamic terrorism have arrested dozens of suspects, all allegedly working to recruit potential suicide bombers for the Iraq insurgency. At least two Spanish citizens, including March 11 suspect Mohammed Afalah, are believed to have blown themselves up in Iraq, and an investigation by the respected El Pais daily revealed some 80 others have traveled to the country in recent months intending to do the same.
An AQ organizer was recently arrested for tring to help jihadis make their pilgramige of death to Iraq, but for some reason they didn't identify his contacts within Syria or Iraq. Wonder who they were? Let's remember the bulk of the young mujahadeen were entering through Ba'athist Syria and being led primarily into Sunni areas of Iraq. Let's also remember that Tariq Aziz invited them to come fight for Arabia at the beginning of the war.
He said authorities believe the Madrid bombers learned how to construct the bombs _ all connected to Mitsubishi Trium T110 mobile phones _ from Internet sites linked to radical Islamic groups. The devices were similar to ones used in the 2002 Bali bombing, he said, evidence that militants in both countries got information on the same radical Web sites.
KSM was also implicated in the Bali attacks, yet they'd have us believe these guys got their bomb experience off the net. Downloading is one thing, building is another. Even master bombmaker Ramzi Yousef almost blew himself to Allah making a bomb, so its hard to believe they'd entrust the operation to ameteurs. Madrid was an important attack, strategically timed to disrupt an election with the end goal being the removal of Spanish troops from Iraq.

Prudence would suggest waiting for the final report before making further speculations, but if these leaks are any indication of the report to follow, it sounds like we're not gonna learn anything new. Just more rootless, non-state actors at work.

Head in the contrails

In case you're tired of the portgate blogathon, I present to you below an article about global warming, just for a change. Heh. (can I say that?)

Fly much? Then you are now considered a global warming villain, contributing to the biosphere's demise everytime you walk down the jetway. That's part of the world according to Monbiot—George Monbiot, to be exact. Sidebar--some believe him to be the source of the popular right wing slur “moonbat”.

In his view airliners cause more damage than SUVs, barbeque grills or even cigarettes. Yes it's true, in order to maintain flight they do tend to pump out various amounsts of CO, CO2 and other particulates, which contribute to the formation of those whitish trailing streaks of cloud matter commonly known as contrails.

These cloud streaks are highly discriminatory, to the point of needing diversity training classes. Apparently they have a nasty habit of not bothering to stop much solar radiation (from the sun) from reaching the ground, while at the same time bouncing most of the outgoing radiation from the planet back to the planet. In this manner they are greenhouse effect enablers. Of course, this same thing happens with regular white wispy clouds not produced by airliners.

At least Monbiot chose to ignore the plethora of conspiracy theories involving contrails, one of which will be presented here for entertainment value.

Seriously, his point was that aviation cannot be significantly changed to make it cleaner without sacrificing, well, flight. Additionally, 12,000 foot runways tend to take up space and will become increasingly harder to build as land becomes more scarce, leading to eminent domain battles. And he’s correct, there are few if any visionary designs on the drawing board to replace what's up there now, at least from a propulsion standpoint.

The article is pretty short on conclusive proof, though. Sure, there is undoubtedly some climate change caused by airplanes, but hey--when you're trying to save the planet, who needs any stinkin data:
Flying kills. We all know it, and we all do it. And we won't stop doing it until the government reverses its policy and starts closing the runways
Ah the solution--just shut it down. Back to camels and canoes, I reckon. I think the man is suffereing from a form of journalistic hypoxia:
When I challenge my friends about their planned weekend in Rome or their holiday in Florida, they respond with a strange, distant smile and avert their eyes. They just want to enjoy themselves. Who am I to spoil their fun? The moral dissonance is deafening.
Well, if YOU are tired of the numbing guilt of spoiling the planet everytime you catch a plane, do your part--take a container ship on your trip to London. The ports are safe now!
