Go Jump in the Lake, FDL

Screaming FDL message, beside a picture of Tim McVeigh:
In the Wake of Arrests in Three States, Right-Wingers Rush to Defend Terror Suspects, Criticize FBI
It really is amazing how coordinated the strategy is becoming on the left. Are they all allowed on the journolist now? Apparently jumping to conclusions is back in style.

But really, should they even be using McVeigh as a comparison here? He wasn't an ardent Christian like these Michigan loonytoons and besides, one of the left's great heroes, former Clinton and Bush counter-terrorism czar Richard Clarke wrote in his book "Against All Enemies":
(On Page 127, Clarke notes that it's possible that al-Qaida operatives in the Philippines "taught Terry Nichols how to blow up the Oklahoma Federal Building." Intelligence places Nichols there on the same days as Ramzi Yousef, and "we do know that Nichols's bombs did not work before his Philippines stay and were deadly when he returned.")
And note to the Fire Dogs--that's Slate, quoting Clarke, not some story in World Nut Daily. It's never been settled as to whether Nichols took a bomb-making lesson from Yousef or one of his al Qaeda pals in the Philippines. Evidently Clinton never interrogated Yousef enough to find out very much so we'll probably never know. But if he did, well--that would change everything, wouldn't it?

"Group arrested not Christian or militia, insider says" (CNN)

""They're really a fringe group outside of anything we do.

"They're more of a private army or a terrorist organization or really just a criminal organization.""

The article sounds interesting, but it goes on...

"The Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based nonprofit organization that monitors hate groups and other fringe organizations, lists the Hutaree as a "Patriot" group militia.

"Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the 'New World Order,' engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing or advocate or adhere to extreme anti-government doctrines," the center said in a report, "Rage on the Right: The Year in Hate and Extremism."

The center also defines Patriot groups as "militias and other organizations that see the federal government as part of a plot to impose 'one-world government' on liberty-loving Americans.""

Patriot group?

As to Timothy McVeigh, I still think there is the Muslim connection that not many are willing to talk about or investigate, so it seems. He was not what I would call a militia member or a religious nut.

He may have had some fringe dealings with militias, but he didn't appear to be a Christian zealot in any fashion.

But if Nichols did get his bomb training from Abu Sayyaf or AQ that would really change the perspective of how we handled terrorism in the 90s.

For instance, Yousef was captured in Feb 1995 before the building went down yet apparently they never interrogated him--or he never told them very much. Had he been coerced into giving up Nichols they could have possibly stopped the plot. Why hasn't anyone ever questioned this?

1. There was a Muslim connection to McVeigh. John Doe #2 was never found and it was not Nichols. The first composite sketch was spot on for McVeigh, why would we suspect anything less for #2?

2. No one has condemned these arrests that I know of, just the timing of them. From what I understand, this group has been advocating what they advocate for awhile now.

3. It may be seen as an intimidating gesture toward other less reactionary groups, those who merely do not trust government.

4. Don't be surprised that if every time there is genuine outrage against the government for its policies, they respond by rounding up another anti-government cult they have been watching forever, just to scare people from expressing their outrage.

I fear that as well. Personally I think they've got to act on groups they think are about to engage in violence. Matter of fact, we can only hope they've infiltrated all the Islamic sleeper cells in America who are perhaps a coded message away from causing real trouble.

Somehow some way, I rather doubt it.
