The tornado stories from across the Mid South from Sunday's storms are both fantastic and heartbreaking. An article in today's Commercial Appeal about Marmaduke, Arkansas is no different--the 'wall of angels' survived intact despite Marmaduke being practically blown off the map.
However, the Marmaduke-Dyersburg storm wasn't the only 'Supercell' in action on Sunday night. Another large cell tracked across central Arkansas on a direct line to downtown Memphis. The nasty tornado produced from this cell is shown in the photo above. Click on the pic for the 'chasing story' (c/o Stormskies via NWS).
Indeed, the NWS issued a tornado warning for the city of Memphis, and witnesses claimed to have seen a funnel. But the intensity of the storm quickly decreased upon crossing the Mississippi River (something locals have long claimed is a factor) only to re-spin into a tornadic storm 50 miles east of the city.
Those who want to help the survivors in northwest Tennessee and northeast Arkansas may do so by donating to the charity of your choice with emphasis on the Salvation Army and Red Cross. Local Memphis radio stations are also taking donations.
Spring is always a dangerous time in this region, and it's getting off to a bad start this year. Another round of severe weather may be arriving tomorrow and Friday. Although sometimes there's not much a person can do, preparedness is still a wise thing. Invest in a SAME NOAA Weather Radio, programmable for warnings affecting only your immediate area. Have yourself a plan of action, it could save your life.
