Tigerhawk has a column up concisely spelling out what's wrong with GPS-based road taxes based on an AP story floating around this morning, picked up by our morning paper as well. I blogged about it here last year, including a link to comments from DOT Secretary Mary Peters on who's already doing this, how it might work on the broad scale, and why we need it. We may need it, but we don't need it.
The comments at Tigerhawk sum up some of the ways in which such a thing might be defeated or scammed but aside from that, it's simply the most egregious violation of privacy ever dreamed up by government. Gotta be a better way.
