The AP story is here. Notice the storyline seems a tad biased against Bush, yet there was no byline. Guess it's safer to pontificate anonymously about this story.
Here's the crux of the FBI's conclusions:
The investigation "confirmed the documents to be fraudulent and concluded they were more likely part of a criminal scheme for financial gain," FBI spokesman John Miller said Friday, describing the contents of the letter.
Miller did not say what led the FBI to its conclusion or identify the perpetrators of the hoax.
That certainly opens up many culprit possibilities. Logic would say it was someone with access to actual documents or with personal knowledge of the African uranium industry. Or perhaps such an individual simply provided relevant information to the forger, himself a small time crook enticed by a big score.
For those who never believe the official government line, here ya go- perhaps the FBI concluded the reason they were created for profit was based largely on their small-time crudeness. This was an effort to cover their original purpose, which was to be discovered after being received by the target. Hey, that could also cover both sides -- politics and money go together so well.
Too bad the FBI didn't provide a 'born-on date' for the docs. That would have been very interesting.
