The scourge of the modern pirate

Most have probably heard about the pirate assault on the cruise ship off the African coast. Today it was reported the ship used a "sonic weapon" against the scaliwags.

The sonic device, known as a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships.

Wonder who, other than cruise ship operators, have this capability? I also wonder about other "non-lethal" weapons various private individuals/businesses might have in their weapons cabinet these days.
