Optimists needed

It's prime time for pessimists.

Our fight against terror and extremism around the world seems to be held together by wires. Somewhere along the way the conventional wisdom nazis morphed America into the actual cause of the terrorism rather than the cure by our simple act of fighting back. The residue has produced a large group of people busily clicking their heels in unison and chanting 'home, home, home'.

Another group actively pretends terrorism never existed prior to 9/11 and lives in a fantasy world of conspiracies that say our own government is behind the terrorism, which is designed to reduce the scary and unknown into the known. In other words, if we just remove "el Diablo" everything will be fine.

Speak of the devil, the president appears to be a decent man who always seems to see "brighter days ahead" but can't communicate effectively enough to keep the cohesive fighting spirit alive nor even control his own government, which only invites derision and division. As we are seeing, politicians are not apt to stay on a listing ship even if the stakes are ridiculously high.

The world is chock full of weapons of mass destruction, not all of them accounted for. Some were even used against America shortly after 9/11 and we still haven't found the culprit(s). Newspapers openly report about government speculation on what our response might be to a nuclear attack (blow up the entire planet or nobody?) while certain politicians strategize on how to blame the first response on the president. See above.

In the natural world massive fires are burning in Hollywood and in south Georgia, while floods and tornadoes hammer the plains and we suffer through sharp flip-flops of temperature, all occurring within the cacophony of climate change guilt. We're told all these horrible things are not natural but due to our basic need for affordable transportation, heating, cooling, food and commerce. And somewhere between landing on the Moon and today NASA became interested in weather, too, and their report is not good. So much for the idea of being muzzled.

The borders are out of control and nobody has a plan to fix them. Examples of the chaos keep popping up, like fatal traffic accidents and murders, and even terror plots:
Eljvir Duka is 23. Shain Duka is 26. Dritan Duka is 28. They are all illegal immigrants, according to federal immigration officials.

Shain Duka is the only brother to ever get a driver's license, thought it expired in 2003. But that hasn't stopped him or his brothers from driving, records show.

Each has tallied at least 19 points for moving violations
Yet despite all these obvious red flags the immigration advocates, including many church officials, will probably make the wagon circle even tighter and shift the blame to "vigilantes" or "racists", ie, those who want the existing laws enforced.

Corruption is rife throughout all levels of government and pornography only a click away on the internets. Men who desire sex with minor children claim they cannot control themselves and even form support groups to pretend it's OK, while female teachers seduce underage boys from their own classrooms.

Now, saying all that I'll say this--there's really nothing new under the sun, our current problems were shared by the ancient Greeks. The difference might be that we've got them all coming together at once. Whether it qualifies as what Christ called, "the signs of the times" is a matter of faith but it's doubtful many would deny we're coming to a pivotal point in our existence, and America is leading the world right now. Are any of the current crop of leaders vying for 2008 nomination equipped to effectively lead such a mess?
