Stormtracker thinks it's becoming a tropical storm and suggests the National Hurricane Center might be in a pickle regards whether to name it. The season doesn't officially start until June 1.
Frankly, I don't see the same angst from the NHC that he does. The storm is strange looking but not exactly a classic developing tropical storm because the "core" is not "warm". This fella originated in a cold upper climate and has moved into the Gulf Stream area where waters and temperatures are warmer. Think of it more as a "hybrid" (pun intended).
Weather forecasts on the Carolina coast have hoisted high wind warnings of gusts to near 50 mph.
Even if it becomes a pre-season TS, we've had them before. Will it be a sign of global warming? Hard to say, but no doubt if any damage occurs on the coast it'll be blamed on it. Perhaps they should name it Albert.
GREENSBURG FLAP 5/8/07
Let's hope the Greensburg tornado devastation doesn't become too politicized. Finger pointing and invoking Katrina is not productive whatsoever. Americans have always had that "can-do" spirit in times of trouble and we need to pull together here. If the damn Governor and White House want to play games we need to get other volunteers together and help these folks.
By the way, Greensburg isn't the only town to literally be wiped off the map by a twister lately. A small town in the Missouri bootheel was almost wiped out last year and is still picking up the pieces. But the spirit of individualism can still be found:
"It could be worse," said Aaro Hayes, fanning herself on an 88?F afternoon when the air conditioner in her mobile home quit working, just one day after FEMA officials delivered the residence to the lot where her former home used to sit. There are thousands of FEMA trailers stored in Hope, AR leftover from Katrina. I've seen them passing through Memphis on rail cars. Are they on the move yet? Let's hope so.
