John Edwards made some news over the holiday weekend with his cradle to grave socialized meds proposal. While it will soon pass from the 24/7 news cycle in light of Bush's Iraq trip it'll no doubt reappear, and when it does it might be fun to ask the candidate how his proposal affects illegals.
If, as he says, "it requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care", then presumably it would force everyone into a database after the initial visit, which he says would be mandatory. Illegals are already getting health care at emergency rooms and certain clinics so it would seem his plan would either force them out of hiding or force them back across the border since surely it would require a Social Security number or some other official identification. Am I missing something?
Perhaps what he's not saying is that he'll need to pass an amnesty bill of some sort before we can get to Edwardscare. Otherwise, everybody will not be covered, unless he considers illegals not worthy of count.
